Overexposure to the sun is the cause of most spots. Age spots refers to the brown spots that will appear over time on the face and body as a result of this prolonged and excessive sun exposure. As we age, our skin is exposed to an increasing number of sunburns making the damage worse.

Age or sun spots, which usually appear in people age forty five and older, are different from moles and birthmarks. They are flat and appear gray, brown, or black in color. While they vary in size, most age spots are under a centimeter in diameter. They have a round shape, although their borders look irregular.

Our skin is really melanin pigment, which absorbs sunlight and helps protect the skin from natural UV radiation. As we get older, the skin’s  ability to fend off UV rays from the sun begins to dimimish, and as a result, we see age spots. These age spots can be effectively treated with skin lightening or skin brightening creams.

There are different catagories of brownish, dark spots.  There are freckles and solar lentigos, or age spots.  These are created when the sun damages the cells on the surface of the skin.  Many of the cells on the surface form a layer of dead skin and layer of keratin that is supposed protect our skin from outside dangers, like the sun and environmental toxans.  About 10% if the time cells produce a melancyte that produces melanin pgiment that creates the brown spots, in reality it is trying to protect the skin when the pigment is formed.  Darked skin people have more protection from this pigmentation than lighter skinned people.  As a result, lighter skin people get freckling and brown patches.

Sometimes these spots are called liver spots, but they have nothing to do with liver function or even your age.  The “age spots” have more to do with how long you have been exposed to the sun.

How do you know if these spots are cancerous cells?

If you see any change in the spots, or moles or any lesions appear, you should see a doctor or dermotologiest to determine the seriousness of the  skin condition.

How can you diminish the appearance of the discoloration from age spots?

However, if it is just the pigmented skin you see, then you have several options for treatment.  Skin lightening or skin brigtening creams are a cost effective, safe, and effective way to diminish the spots. It will take longer to see results than laser treatments, microderabrasion or chemical peels, but you have less side effects no pain and no recovery time. To prevent further age spots from developing, avoid sun exposure and always use a sunscreen protection factor of 25 or higher everyday; not just those days that you are out in the sun for long periods of time.
